On being a Writer

For every writer is always indebted

To the world around him for her beauty and blatancy

To the people for their thoughts, words and eccentricities

To life for her cruel and intriguing imagination

But to be a writer is to see the world with a microscope

in a perpetually heightened state of awareness

And this makes way not only for clear truths and great joys

But also for agonies equivalent to the depths of hell

For what others hear as a whisper,

is for the writer the melody of his next story

Loud and all-consuming
